Dec. 18, 2008 (China Knowledge) - 263 Network Communication Co Ltd, a China-based Internet and communications technology company, has purchased a 50% stake in iTalk Global Communications, a U.S. telecommunications operator, as per industry sources.

The move suggests 263 Network's intention to tap into the North American VoIP market, said a source close to the company.

Reportedly, the two sides clinched a cooperation agreement in September this year. Recently, 263 Network secured the regulatory approval on the deal.

Though the VoIP communications service is not fully available in China at the moment, the industry has a good prospect in the country. 263 Network is able to accumulate relevant industrial experience via the acquisition, sources said.

263 Network is the first Chinese electronic mail service provider specializing in providing mail service.

iTalk Global, a leading VoIP service provider in the U.S., has a wide user base in the North American Chinese VoIP market. iTalk Global is mainly engaged in provision of VoIP services in the home and Canadian markets, according to the company's profile.

Oct. 27, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan-based Fubon Life Assurance Co Ltd, which recently merged with ING Antai Life Insurance Co, predicted that its premium income may reach NT$200 billion this year, sources reported, citing General Manager Cheng Pen-yuan as saying.

The issuer said earlier this year that its premium income were expected to hit NT$125 billion this year, and later in June, it raised the forecast to NT$170 billion. Fubon Life recorded NT$56.7 billion in income from first-year premiums between January and April, sources said.

The new company was the island's second-largest insurer after Cathay Life Insurance Co, with 3 million policyholders, said Chairman Richard Tsai.

Fubon Life, a subsidiary of Fubon Financial Holding Co Ltd, saw its fee income reach NT$282.07 billion in 2008.

World Bank President Robert Zoellick yesterday praised China's government for its handling of the economic crisis while noting that expansionary fiscal and monetary policies are still needed to guarantee a solid recovery.

"China's actions have helped prevent the global crisis from getting worse, and I agree with [China's] leaders that it is too early to roll back fiscal and monetary measures," Zoellick said at a press conference yesterday during his third official visit to the country.

China's trading partners are benefiting from the rise in domestic demand and that is helping to strengthen confidence across the world, he noted.

Responding to questions about the potential for inflation in the country, Zoellick said, "I am not worried about inflation now."

He suggested that the priority for the global economy was still to adopt expansionary fiscal and monetary policies to achieve a real recovery.

When asked whether the World Bank has changed its prediction about China's economic growth, Zoellick said that eight percent growth was likely.

The World Bank's quarterly update on China released in June raised its GDP growth prediction from 6.5 percent in its update in March to 7.2 percent, due to expansionary fiscal and monetary policies that have kept the economy growing.

GDP rose 7.9 percent in the second quarter, up from the same quarter in 2008, and a 1.8 percentage point jump from the first quarter of this year, according to the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao discussed both China's and the world's economy with Zoellick Tuesday.

The World Bank leader also added that he did not believe that China would adopt further stimulus measures.

Zoellick begins a visit to Anhui Province today to inspect World Bank Group-supported projects in forestry, water conservation and highway development.

China's Commerce Ministry spokesman Yao Jian said Wednesday the investigation of employees of Rio Tinto Ltd., won't affect the environment for China's external trade and foreign investment.

The Rio Tinto case is being handled according to the law, and foreign companies must abide by Chinese rules, Yao said at a regular press Wednesday.

He also revealed that iron ore price talks between Chinese steel mills and ore miners are still ongoing and he expects the current process for setting iron ore prices to continue.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Wednesday stepped up pressure on China over the detention of an Australian employee and three others of Rio Tinto who were held over allegations of stealing state secrets.

“Australia, of course, has significant economic interests in its relationship with China,” Rudd said in Sydney. “But I also remind our Chinese friends that China, too, has significant economic interests at stake in its relationship with Australia and with it other commercial parties around the world,”

The arrest of four Rio Tinto employees came at a sensitive time as the world's second-largest iron ore producer scrapped a $19.5 billion investment plan by China's metals firm Chinalco last month.
